XN85 Body Work Removal
This article is part of one of many for doing other projects on your XN85.
Lets walk through step by step on striping the xn85 of her clothes. First you will need to remove the side covers before you can remove anything else. Pull gently from the bottom center outwards for the first tab, then pull the rear section towards you. Last but not least pull the front tab off very carefully as this is the one that tends to break.
You will need to use a socket 13mm and a 3/4 inch driver with a small extension for removing the seat. Not to hard just loosen the two bolts and off she comes.
Take a Phillips Head screw driver to remove the four screws that hold on the tail section and rubber bushing for the seat to rest on.
Remove the turbo side vents very carefully as these tabs tend to want to break off as well. My secret is to put one hand inside between the vent and the fairing to hold it from flexing then pull off from the rear towards the front of the bike.
Next you will need to remove the upper fairing with the front turn signals. This peace comes off as on big one so you don't have to worry about removing the windscreen or anything else. Take a Phillips Head screw driver and remove the side screws and the underneath screws in the front (total of four). Then disconnect the tow wires for each turn signal. I usually take a pen and some tape to label left and right sides so I don't get them confused when re-hooking them backup.
Next slide the faring forward about two inches so you can disconnect the fuse box and the idle light. Then remove the fairing by sliding it forward the rest of the way.
Now comes the fun part removing the gas tank. First remove the two bolts that hold the tank on with a 10mm socket and 3/4 driver.
Next turn your petcock to the off position so no gas spills when you disconnect the fuel lines.
Next disconnect the breather line for the gas tank with your figures or a pair of needle nose pliers if you find need for them.
Next I like to use a helper block of wood to prop up the gas tank while I remove the fuel lines and gas gauge wires.
Next remove the fuel pump line and the return gas line from the petcock with a set of needle nose pliers.
Last disconnect the gas gauge wires from the gas tank and remove the tank. Make sure the rubber mounts on the frame don't come off and if they do to put them back on the frame so you don't lose them.
