I raced a Harley today and after some really hard riding I managed to PASS the guy. I was riding on one of those really, really twisting sections of canyon road with no straight sections to speak of and where most of the curves have warning signs that say "15 MPH".

I knew if I was going to pass one of those monsters with those big-cubic-inch motors, it would have to be a place like this where handling and rider skill are more important than horsepower alone.

I saw the guy up ahead as I exited one of the turns and knew I could catch him, but it wouldn't be easy. I concentrated on my braking and cornering. three corners later, I was on his fender. Catching him was one thing; passing him would prove to be another.

Two corners later, I pulled up next to him as we sailed down the mountain. I think he was shocked to see me next to him, as I nearly got by him before he could recover. Next corner, same thing. I'd manage to pull up next to him as we started to enter the corners but when we came out he'd get on the throttle and outpower me. His horsepower was almost too much to overcome, but this only made me more determined than ever.

My only hope was to outbrake him. I held off squeezing the lever until the last instant. I kept my nerve while he lost his. In an instant I was by him. Corner after corner, I could hear the roar of his engine as he struggled to keep up. Three more miles to go before the road straightens out and he would pass me for good.

But now I was in the lead and he would no longer hold me back. I stretched out my lead and by the time we reached the bottom of the canyon, he was more than a full corner behind. I could no longer see him in my rear-view mirror.

Once the road did straighten out, it seemed like it took miles before he passed me, but it was probably just a few hundred yards. I was no match for that kind of horsepower, but it was done. In the tightest section of road, where bravery and skill count for more than horsepower and deep pockets, I had passed him. though it was not easy, I had won the race to the bottom of the canyon and I had preserved the proud tradition of another of America's best bikes.

I will always remember that moment. I don't think I've ever pedaled so hard in my life. And some of the credit must go to Schwinn, as well. They really make a great bicycle...

I did not write this, it was sent to me via an email but I find it funny as hell.

Robert,
As I was reading I'm thinking you should be writing for cycle mag.
Good story, just shows that in cycling, any cycling, the rider still is a vital part
of the equation. Two wheels everyday, kepts the doctor away!!!

Question: Whats the difference between a Harley and a vacuum cleaner?
Answer: Where the dirtbag sits.

OBRUT,

You have a very good point there. Most of the harley riders I have encountered over the last 18 years of riding have not been the freindiest bunch, they don't even wave to you when passing. Well we know you belong to our sister turbo club at least. You shold post your pictures in the gallery so we can get a good look at your bike. Nice plate by the wya. hey do you plan on attending their rally with us in July?

Robert

I was born and raised harley. My first bike was a AMF mini bike. I have learned more about bikes from these "DirtBags" then any of you could possibly imagine. Most will give you the shirt off their backs to help. I have met more assholes on a sportbike then any other bike. If it wasnt for magazines they wouldnt know shit. So I am sorry if I dont take to slamming my heritage lightly. Cant we all just get along??

Since I started the thread I will finish it. It was meant as a joke to the Harley performance and nothing more. I have also enjoyed everyone I have met riding motorcycles of all brands. Sorry if I offended you. I personally have no experence with Harleys except some of the people I have met besides for you seemed either uptight or to good for the rest to associate themselves with. maybe its just the part fo the country I live in our maybe its my limited exposure to them.

I did enjoy your story, I did laugh and I wasnt offended by it at all, but I seen where this thread was going, I just feel strongly because of my up bringing and friends, The guys who machined my spacers and who will be dyno-ing my bike(for free because it is a unique bike and see what it can do) have a harley shop that also has a Buell race bike(Hoban Racing). These guys are great, along with other people I have met in the "Harley" crowd. I would also like to add that I do "stand up" for the other bikes but it is to usually guys who just bought their first harley and talk like they have owned them for life. There are butt-heads in every corner of motorcycling. Motorcycling is a lifestyle, to me its not about the bike, but the guy who is on it. I can handle a good ribbing, but I cannot hadle out right bashing, so that is why I spoke up, no hard feelings at all just gonna speak my mind everytime someone attacks any brand of motorcycle. There isnt a bike out that I wouldnt enjoy, but if I had my choice it would be on any knuclehead and of coarse the XN.
